Глагол ought to

Ought to по значению похож на глагол should. По стилю он более формальный и используется реже, чем should.

ФОРМА:

Ought никак не меняется. После него идет инфинитив с частицей to.
I ought to phone my boss first. - Сначала я должен позвонить своему начальнику.

Инфинитив после ought to может стоять в перфектной форме (have + 3-я форма глагола). Тогда речь идет о невыполненных обязательствах в прошлом.
She ought to have phones her boss, but I'm afraid she didn't. - Она должна была позвонить начальнику, но, боюсь, не позвонила.

В отрицаниях not ставится после ought:
You ought not to have phoned the boss. - Ты не должен был звонить начальнику.

В вопросах с ought (встречаются редко, чаще используется should) это слово выносится перед подлежащим:
Ought she to phone the boss? - Она должна позвонить начальнику?

ЗНАЧЕНИЕ:
Ought to используется, когда мы хотим

- дать совет, рекомендацию о том, как нужно действовать в настоящем или как нужно было действовать в прошлом.
Something you ought to have thought of. - Что-то, о чем тебе стоило подумать раньше.

- сказать о вероятности события, основываясь на какой-то информации или на собственном убеждении, что что-то вполне логично в сложившейся ситуации.
The weather ought to improve on the weekend. - Погода должна улучшиться в выходные.

OK then, I grew up in Colorado, and there’s nothing you’ve described that I haven’t seen before. I’m staying back at the hotel and taking a hot tub. H: Plus, there are two kangaroos, with one of them hitting the other while the other is trying to bite the first kangaroo. Oh my gosh! You OUGHT TO come here right away! W: Now that sounds like a really nice view. H: Forget about the view! Come here and help me! Ten out of ten for this lesson--it's clear and not overloaded with information. I'm so glad to see that the new videos on Puzzle English now include information about the frequency of certain English words and phrases. Without much practice in spoken English, it can be hard to sense how appropriate certain phrases are in different contexts, and knowing the frequency helps you develop that sense over time 🙂
